Myocardial extracellular volume expansion in patients with hypertension
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background Hypertension is associated with the development of myocardial fibrosis with a subsequent increase in the myocardial extracellular volume (ECV). T1 measurements pre and post a contrast cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) study provide a robust non-invasive method for quantification of the ECV. We aimed to determine whether the CMR-derived ECV can differentiate healthy volunteers from patients with systemic arterial hypertension.

Identification of myocardial extracellular matrix expansion by cardiac MRI in hypertensive patients
Background Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is an important marker of adverse prognosis in cardiovascular disease and commonly occurs in association with hypertension. While late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) reflects myocardial replacement fibrosis in hypertensive patients, we hypothesized that the myocardial extracellular volume fraction (MECVF) would better reflect the presence and severity...
متن کاملRelationship between expansion of the myocardial interstitial space and ventricular performance in patients with pulmonary hypertension
Background Diffuse interstitial fibrosis is a common end point in heart failure from multiple etiologies. The post contrast T1 time, extracellular volume (ECV) and partition coefficient (l) of gadolinium-based contrast media have been used to estimate expansion of myocardial interstitial space, as a surrogate of interstitial fibrosis. The aim of the study was to explore the relationship between...
متن کاملNovel magnetic resonance imaging marker of diffuse myocardial fibrosis in hypertensive heart disease: the role of transcytolemmal water-exchange
Background LGE may fail to detect diffuse fibrosis in several cardiac conditions. A novel approach uses the myocardial extracellular volume-fraction (MECVF), measured as distribution volume of a gadolinium constrast, as a marker of extracellular expansion. Previous studies have assumed the fast-exchange (FX) limit for the transcytolemal waterexchange, yet the administration of an extracellular-...
متن کاملMyocardial injury and fibrogenesis: extracellular volume expansion is associated with elevated Galectin-3 levels in patients with myocarditis
Background Myocarditis subsumes a variety of entities, including diverse courses from complete healing to dilated cardiomyopathy with severe myocardial fibrosis. T1-mapping cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) has the ability to quantify myocardial extracellular volume (ECV) as a surrogate of acute and chronic myocardial injury. Galectin-3 is an important mediator of fibrogenesis and contrib...
متن کاملMeasuring the expansion of myocardial extracellular volume using quantitative perfusion imaging: Validation with T1 mapping and simultaneous 18FDG-PET in patients after acute myocardial infarction
Background Expansion of myocardial extracellular volume (ECV) as detected by native and post contrast T1 mapping has been associated with different types of cardiomyopathy. We hypothesize that fully quantitative evaluation of MR perfusion imaging can localize and quantify edematous ECV expansion after acute coronary events with sensitivity equivalent to ECV measurements based on T1 mapping or t...
